When I first stepped onto my yoga mat over a year ago, I was filled with hesitation. Could someone as inflexible as me actually do yoga? Asana photos on Instagram only heightened my doubts – all those pretzel-like poses seemed impossible for this stiff, awkward beginner!
My perception shifted completely when I attended my first Hatha yoga class at City Yoga Studio. From the first om, the energy in the studio felt welcoming, uplifting and wonderfully non-judgemental. My teacher, Amanda, guided us through gentle stretches, balances and relaxation techniques that felt restorative rather than straining. There were students of all ages and body types in class, many also new to yoga. Seeing their dedication helped motivate me.
After class, Amanda made a point to provide encouragement, answer questions, and offer modification tips to help me improve. Her warmth and patience made me want to come back. Soon, I looked forward to my yoga time as self-care that nourished me, body and soul
Connecting with other yogis before and after class has provided community and inspiration to continue on this journey. We celebrate each other’s little victories, whether holding a challenging pose for one breath longer or finally mastering crow pose. Through yoga, we’re becoming our strongest, most centered selves while forming bonds promoting positive growth. I’m so grateful this studio helped me discover my place in the yoga world as a hopeful beginner!
